Our review

NordPass is the budget-friendly modern pick. Cheapest first-year pricing in the category. Strong if you're already in the Nord ecosystem (NordVPN + NordPass + NordLocker). Renewal price spike is the main catch.

Pros

Cons

Why NordPass is the budget pick from the Nord Security ecosystem

NordPass is the password manager from Nord Security — the same parent company that owns NordVPN (the largest consumer VPN), NordLocker (encrypted file storage), and after 2022, Surfshark. Founded 2019, headquartered in Lithuania (Nord Security's HQ).

NordPass is younger than 1Password (since 2005) or Bitwarden (since 2016), but benefits from Nord Security's deep security infrastructure and 14+ years of operational experience running consumer security products.

The pitch: cheapest premium password manager ($1.49/mo first year), modern XChaCha20 encryption, tight integration with the Nord ecosystem if you also use NordVPN.

What NordPass actually offers

Core password management: - Unlimited passwords + secure notes - Cross-device sync (Premium tier) - Password generator - Auto-fill via browser extension + mobile apps - Password Health audit (weak/reused/breached detection) - Data Breach Scanner (alerts when your email appears in breaches) - Email Masking (generate disposable email aliases — Premium feature)

XChaCha20 encryption — NordPass uses this newer encryption algorithm instead of AES-256. XChaCha20 is faster on modern CPUs and considered more resistant to certain side-channel attacks. Practically: both AES-256 and XChaCha20 are unbroken; the difference is marginal in real-world security.

Web Vault + Browser Extensions + Mobile Apps: - Web vault at vault.nordpass.com - Browser extensions: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera - Mobile apps: iOS, Android - Desktop apps: Windows, macOS, Linux

OCR scanner — Take a photo of a passport, driver's license, or credit card; NordPass extracts the text fields. Useful for storing IDs without manual data entry.

Pricing breakdown ({{ year }})

Tier First year Renewal
Free $0 $0
Premium (1-month) $4.99/mo $4.99/mo
Premium (1-year) $1.49/mo ($17.88 total) $2.99/mo ($35.88)
Premium (2-year) $1.29/mo ($30.96 total) $2.99/mo on renewal
Family (1-year, 6 users) $2.79/mo ($33.48 total) $4.99/mo ($59.88)

The renewal price doubles after year 1. This is the standard Nord ecosystem pricing pattern (NordVPN does the same). At $35.88/year renewal, NordPass is comparable to 1Password ($35.88/year).

The free tier — limited but functional

NordPass free tier supports: - Unlimited passwords - Auto-fill + auto-save - One active device at a time (login limit — you must log out on Device A to use Device B)

The one-device limit is the killer for many users. If you have a phone + laptop, you're constantly logging out and back in. Most users upgrade to Premium specifically to remove this limit.

Bitwarden free tier (unlimited devices) is significantly more usable. NordPass free tier is more of a trial than a permanent option.

XChaCha20 vs AES-256

Most password managers use AES-256-GCM. NordPass uses XChaCha20-Poly1305. Both are considered unbroken.

XChaCha20 advantages: - Faster on devices without AES hardware acceleration (older Android phones, embedded devices) - More resistant to timing attacks - Used by Google's BoringSSL, WireGuard VPN protocol, ProtonMail

AES-256 advantages: - Industry standard for 25+ years - Hardware acceleration on virtually all modern CPUs - More extensively studied cryptographically

Practically, the difference doesn't matter for password manager security. Both are sufficient against any realistic attacker. NordPass marketing this choice is more about differentiation than meaningful security improvement.

Where NordPass wins

Cheapest premium first year at $17.88. No competitor undercuts this for a full-featured password manager.

Modern XChaCha20 encryption — talking point, not practical advantage.

Nord ecosystem integration — If you already use NordVPN, the NordPass UI feels consistent. Single login (Nord Account) works across products.

Data Breach Scanner — Alerts when your email appears in any of 9 billion+ scraped breach records. Comparable to Have I Been Pwned but integrated.

OCR scanner — Take a photo of an ID card, auto-extracts text. Genuinely useful feature.

No major breaches in NordPass's 6+ year history. NordVPN had the 2018 Finnish server breach but NordPass itself has clean record.

Where NordPass loses

Renewal price spike — $17.88 first year → $35.88 second year onward. By year 3, you've paid $89.64 total. By year 5, $161.40. Bitwarden Premium at $10/year would be $50 over the same period.

Free tier limited — One device only. Bitwarden free is unlimited devices, dramatically better for free-tier users.

Smaller market share — NordPass has 3-5 million users vs 1Password's 100M+ or LastPass's 33M. Smaller user base means fewer community resources, fewer integrations, fewer third-party support tools.

Less polished apps than 1Password — NordPass apps are functional but not category-leading. UI feels slightly more "engineering-focused" than design-focused.

No standalone Travel Mode — 1Password feature for hiding vaults at borders. NordPass doesn't have an equivalent.

How NordPass compares to alternatives

NordPass vs 1Password: 1Password is $35.88/year (same as NordPass renewal). 1Password has more-polished apps, Travel Mode, longer market history. NordPass is cheaper first year ($17.88 vs $35.88) but matches at renewal. For long-term ownership, equal pricing; 1Password wins on polish.

NordPass vs Bitwarden: Bitwarden Premium is $10/year, dramatically cheaper than NordPass at $35.88/year renewal. Bitwarden is open-source. NordPass has more polished UI + better OCR scanner + tighter NordVPN integration. For pure value, Bitwarden. For Nord ecosystem users, NordPass.

NordPass vs Dashlane: Dashlane is $59.88/year with bundled VPN + dark web monitoring. NordPass is $35.88/year with separate NordVPN ($60/year first year, $99 renewal). For VPN bundling, Dashlane is cheaper. For password manager alone, NordPass.

NordPass vs Proton Pass: Proton Pass is $1.99/mo first year (similar pricing). Both new entrants (NordPass since 2019, Proton Pass since 2023). Proton Pass is open-source + Swiss jurisdiction. NordPass is closed-source + Panama (Nord Security HQ). For privacy purists, Proton Pass. For Nord ecosystem users, NordPass.

The Nord ecosystem play

If you use NordVPN, the bundle pricing for adding NordPass makes sense: - NordVPN 2-year Plus plan: $5.39/mo (Plus tier includes NordPass) - NordVPN 2-year Complete: $7.39/mo (Complete adds NordLocker encrypted storage)

Buying NordPass as part of NordVPN Plus is cheaper than buying separately. If you're already paying for NordVPN, the upgrade to Plus is $2/month and you get NordPass + Threat Protection Pro + Email Masking.

For NordVPN-only users, this is the best NordPass pricing. Don't buy NordPass standalone if you'll buy NordVPN; bundle them.

Our verdict

NordPass is the right pick if you want: - Cheapest premium first-year ($17.88) - Nord ecosystem integration (you use NordVPN) - OCR scanner for ID storage - Data Breach Scanner for breach alerts - XChaCha20 encryption (marketing differentiation, not practical advantage)

Skip NordPass if: - You want cheapest long-term → Bitwarden Premium at $10/year - You want most-polished apps → 1Password - You want bundled VPN included → Dashlane - You want open-source → Bitwarden or Proton Pass - You're not in the Nord ecosystem → no reason to pick NordPass over alternatives

Best NordPass use case: NordVPN customer upgrading to Plus tier ($5.39/mo) to bundle password management. For standalone password manager, alternatives are usually better fits.

For the affiliate angle: NordPass pays $10-$25/signup. The Nord ecosystem cross-sell makes NordPass especially good for affiliate sites that already drive NordVPN traffic — users coming to a VPN comparison site are receptive to "you should also use a password manager" upsell.
